The “codec” is usually required to play downloaded videos. If installed, the codec keeps loading fabricated notifications urging to pay for using the service. VS Codec PRO also fabricates warnings such as the following message:

Fatal error. Media system on your computer is corrupt. Update your sound and video codec immediately to resolve this issue.

VS CodecPRO may be distributed by different means too. It may be installed by trojans or it may infect computers via web browser exploits.
